Helping Veterans

Help us remember and honor the men and women who have served our country in the military. Starting this Sunday and through Memorial Day weekend we will be collecting items to give to the veterans at the Northport VA Center. The items needed by the veterans have been printed on stars and are on display in the vestry. If you would like to participate please take a star, purchase the item and return it to the box provided by Sunday, May 27th. They were there for us then; let’s be there for them now! Thank you.

Please take note of the new name tags on the board in the Vestry. Pastor Gary designed a simple, modern tag

for the members. Many of them have already been updated,

but if you need a new one, please sign the sheet that is on the shelf below the tags.

If there is a new tag for you, please dispose of the old one to keep the board neat and orderly.

The tags are filed by the first letter of your last name.

Welcome Annie Mark

This week our congregation welcomes a new member to our music team. Annie Mark is a vocalist/ acoustic guitarist and harpist. She has many year’s experience using music to break down barriers and to bring people together.Annie has sung in many venues, including being the music leader of an interdenominational faith community, serving as the music leader of the “A Gathering of Women” retreats, and playing many community events around Long Island.
Annie is looking forward to becoming part of our worship experience, and will be singing the prelude this Sunday, so don’t be late. We are very excited that Annie is with us! Please join us in welcoming her.

Special Collection

Last week there were several special offerings that we were asked to contribute to, and our congregation pulled through to make a dent in all of them. To recap: Monthly Deacons Fund (which aids in confidentially supporting our critically in need) brought in $209.00. Collection to purchase UCC Lenten Reflection Booklets: of the $150.00 needed to purchase these lenten tools, we collected $68.00. Direct Mailing: Pastor Gary asked for help to send a mailing of our Lenten and Easter information to all households in the 11782 zip code area. Of the $1,200.00 it will cost to do this, we raised $660.00. Thank you to all of you who gave that little extra to help in the efforts of our growing church family.

Souper Bowl of Caring: Results!

The Souper Bowl of Caring offering brought in $6,370,104 in cash and food items nationally in support of local charities. Our congregation’s donation was $247.00. Thank you to all of you who donated to this worthy cause.

The Giants and Patriots will be squaring off in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday night. But on Sunday morning, here at SCUCC, we will be holding a Super Bowl of our own, a “Souper Bowl of Caring.” As we get ready to enjoy the game with family and friends we remember our less fortunate brothers and sisters. We will be collecting donations for the Sayville Food Pantry Sunday morning. Please look for Kay Wolf and Gini McLaughlin and their soup bowls to make your donation in the form of cash or a check made payable to Sayville Congregational UCC. As always your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Young Adults Needed

On behalf of the community, Dr. Will Donovan will be conducting a focus group at the Gillette House (47 Gillette Avenue) on February 8 at 7:00 PM to determine how the area can be improved for those 18-29. Those from that age group wishing to participate, please let Pastor Gary know, and please share this with friends!

Once a year we collect “The Christmas Fund,” a UCC effort to assist elderly and vulnerable clergy. This year, SCUCC’s contribution to this ministry of compassionate care went up 40%! On behalf of my sisters and brothers in the ministry, I thank you for your generosity. -Pastor Gary

Sayville CROP Hunger Walk: The After Party

Wow! What a wonderful day! The Sayville CROP Hunger Walk was a resounding success this past Sunday. The weather co-operated, we had a great turnout, and there was a great spirit in the air. More than $13,600 was raised to help our neighbors in need here at home and around the world. That is the most money that we have raised in any one year so far! The funds raised will support the hunger fighting efforts of Church World Service and twenty five percent will go to our local charities, the INN and Hope House Ministries, to aid our fellow Long Islanders. CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty and it is the overwhelming response of our local churches and community that make the Sayville CROP Hunger Walk possible. But there is no doubt that the huge success of the CROP Walk would not be possible without the special commitment, efforts and generosity of the Sayville Congregational U.C.C. Thank you to all of you who volunteered, walked or donated in support of this year’s CROP Walk.
